Renan Barao withdraws from UFC 177 rematch with TJ Dillashaw, replaced by Joe Soto

UFC 169 Weigh-in

With criticism  that UFC 177 was a lacklustre card  it has suffered yet another setback.

Former UFC bantamweight champion and no.1 contender Renan Barao has been removed from the UFC 177 main card. Barao was scheduled to face UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in a title rematch in the main-event of the August 30th card, however just one day out Barao was forced to withdraw from the bout due to complications during his weight cut.

According to a release provided to MMAFighting.com from Nova Uniao, Barao felt dizzy when leaving the tub in his hotel room and hit his head against the wall. The bantamweight passed out and was rushed to the hospital.

Joe Soto [15-2] who was scheduled to appear on the preliminary card of UFC 177 against Anthony Birchak will now be stepping up to face Dillashaw for the bantamweight title on one days notice.

The original UFC 177 card featured a co-main event bout between UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso, however that was eventually moved to UFC 178 to feature as the headlining bout following the cancellation of the light heavyweight championship fight between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.

After the official UFC 177 weigh-ins Dillashaw had some less than flattering words for Barao.

“(Barao) is scared. He doesn’t want it,” he said. “His coaches wanted the rematch more than he did. He’s never missed weight before. It’s kinda funny he does it now.”

Anthony Johnson calls out Alexander Gustafsson: ‘The fans are begging for us to fight’

anthony_johnson

Top UFC light heavyweight contender #5 Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson [18-4] is fast on rise through the UFC’s light heavyweight rankings, it is likely that he is only one impressive victory away from receiving a title shot. And nothing is more impressive than a win over #1 Alexander Gustafsson [16-2].

Johnson took to Facebook to respectfully call out Gustafsson

Gustafsson is currently on the road to recovery following a operation on his knee which forced him out of his rematch with Jon Jones at UFC 178. Gutafsson is expected to return to action in January, which so happens to be the same period of time that Daniel Cormier will be contesting for the title against Jones at UFC 183.

If Gustafsson chooses to wait for his title shot, he may remain inactive for at least eight months. Futhermore if the winner of “Jones vs. Cormier” sustains an injury during their bout, Gustafsson’s wait will be further prolonged once again.

GIF: Rafael dos Anjos shocks the world and TKO’s Benson Henderson in the first round

10419055_10152611183166276_7478667211347392480_n

#9 Rafael dos Anjos shocked the world earlier today at UFC Fight Night 49, when he finished heavy favourite former UFC lightweight champion #2 Benson Henderson in the first round of their scheduled five round main event.

Despite heading into the fight as a significant underdog, dos Anjos would cause one of the biggest upsets of the year. In the opening minutes of the first round dos Anjos would land a double flying knee which caught the chin of Hederson, it was uncertain the extent of damage that Henderson had sustained. However as Henderson begin to stand up once again he was met with a left hook from dos Anjos which knocked Henderson to the canvas and subsequently ended the fight.

Some argued it to be an early stoppage, however it was clear that for that brief moment Henderson was hurt.

Check out the .gif image of the moment which dos Anjos caught Henderson.
